New hotels are popping up in record numbers.
After being homebound for much of the last several years, the American public is now quenching its pent-up thirst for travel by taking to the roads and skies in near record numbers. Total travel spending improved to 0.9% above June 2022 levels and was up 4.7% year-to-date through June 2023 according to the U.S. Travel Association. Heading into the busy summer travel season this past June, air travel demand increased over 11% compared to the same month last year.
In order to meet the demand of travelers, new hotels are popping up across the world. There were a total of 1,842 hotels opened in 2022, a figure that is forecast to grow in the following years to 2,480 global hotel openings in 2023 and 2,707 in 2024, according to Statista.
These hot hotel openings throughout the world indicate a robust travel recovery for an industry that has demonstrated its resilience in major ways throughout some rough times.
