POKER AFLOAT, MELBOURNE

It’s time to put on your poker face and try your hand at Poker Afloat, a casino on the water.

Boarding in Docklands, this Melbourne boat cruise is like no other and offers the perfect opportunity to get out the suit and tie and join the high rollers. What appears to be a normal boat from the outside is transformed into a casino when you walk in, with poker tables both downstairs and up. Poker Afloat owner, David Field, greets everyone at the door and his friendly persona makes you feel like part of the family, and the same goes for the rest of the staff.

The cruise goes for four hours and offers entertainment from start to finish. Whether you’re involved in your own game, mingling with the new friends you’ve made or watching other games, you’ll always be captivated.

The night begins by sitting at any table you choose (or with whom you think might be the weakest players). Although the overall winner goes away with $3,500 at the end of the night, there’s no pressure on the individual tables and it’s very relaxed. Each player starts off with 3,000 chips to get the game rolling and $50 re-buys are available for the first 75 minutes. There are no allocated dealers on the tables so each player takes a turn and every 15 minutes the blinds go up. As players begin to bust out by losing all their chips, they’re replaced with new players until table numbers dwindle.

Beautiful canapés arrive at your tables throughout the night and no one’s left thirsty with free-flowing beer, wine and soft drinks. In between games, people venture out on to the deck to admire the beautiful views of Melbourne city go by and discuss strategy with their new allies.

The end of the night is spent circled around a poker table watching the finalists battle it out for the prize money. Suddenly the game becomes much more intense, and everyone cheers for their favourite to win. First place wins the $3,500 cash, second and third win holiday packages and the top four players gain entry into the monthly $15,000 888PL State Champs.

Overall, Poker Afloat is a wonderful night out that offers something different. Although you’re not guaranteed to come out a winner, you’ll definitely leave with great memories and new friendships.
