A team who understand that quality seafood, good wine and grandma’s recipes aren’t to be messed with.
It’s often said that sometimes ‘less is more’ – although there’s a fine line between being brilliantly simple and downright boring. The guys at The Fish House have hit the nail on the head – they’ve taken fresh, quality seafood and prepared it in a way that lets the flavours speak for themselves. Or, in their words, they “try not to mess with it too much.”
The best way to experience The Fish House is to order the chef’s Menu of the Day. This banquet-style menu offers diners the chance to try a little bit of everything. Staying true to his Greek roots, owner Simon Gloftis serves these dishes in the middle of the table, encouraging guests to share and talk about their food. Even as a return customer, there’d be plenty to talk about, with the menu changing daily depending on what’s fresh. One meal that has stood the test of time is the ‘simple lemony fish soup’ – it’s a Gloftis family recipe and is simple, fresh and very tasty.
With more than 25 wines available by the glass, the Menu of the Day offers a sequence of wine accompaniments from all over the globe. Just like the Southern European influenced menu, many of the wines have been selected from Europe and abroad with a focus on textural, aromatic white wines and food-friendly elegant reds. If the 20-page drinks menu is all too much for the unassuming diner, don’t worry because The Fish House is bolstered with a sommelier team who certainly know their grapes!
The Burleigh Heads venue can’t be beaten in terms of location. Situated on Goodwin Terrace, the restaurant boasts big bi-fold windows, which open up to views of the Surfers Paradise skyline and allow the sound of the ocean to drift through. The use of brick gives it a real rustic, yet chic feel, while the attention to detail is fabulous. Things like the fresh fish window and fish species poster are reminiscent of a fish and chip shop, however the beautiful glass wine displays and rolled hand towels in the bathroom are simple reminders that this is a fish restaurant in its purest form.
