You’re stressed out. You want a holiday. Maybe you’ve actually got a holiday booked – only problem is it’s still five months away. Or perhaps your budget doesn’t quite stretch to an exotic tropical destination at the moment.

How about an impromptu weekend in Torquay?

You can come to this beautiful, low-key township in Victoria the year round. Although it’s famous for its surf beaches, Torquay has so much more to offer than just that: there are scenic coastal walks, adventure sports, food and wine experiences, spa retreats, beautiful houses that you can rent for the weekend, and a cute town centre with cafés that have some of the friendliest staff going.

Stay: Surf Coast Rentals

Stay the night in one of Surf Coast Rentals’ many properties and instantly feel like you’re overseas. Specialising in short-term holiday rentals, their selection of properties span luxury hotel-style apartments and stunning holiday homes.

Surf Coast Rentals will also take care of any tours you’d like to book in the area, as well as recommend restaurants and the best places to visit.

Features across the properties include pools both indoor and out, Jacuzzis, gyms, tennis courts, fireplaces and barbecues. And the prices cater for all budgets (there are 450 properties priced between $110 and $1,000 a night).

This means that during summer you can lounge by a pool, while in the winter you can take a dip in a heated Jacuzzi and warm up by a roaring fire – the choice is yours.

Eat: Growlers

If you want that true local Torquay vibe, you’ve got to have a meal at locally owned and operated restaurant Growlers. Located on The Esplanade opposite Torquay’s iconic beach, you’ll feel like you’re on holiday in this rustically decorated restaurant – no matter the season.

Every evening many of Torquay’s locals stream in to Growlers for a drink or a bite to eat. And when a restaurant’s a favourite with the locals, you know it’s doing something right.

Growlers is relaxed and welcoming and has both an indoor restaurant and garden courtyard. The homely vibe is bolstered by rattan chairs and blue walls mounted with colourful surfboards.

There’s a big focus on fresh fish and meat. They have an oyster menu and mains include the likes of rib eye and 48-hour slow-braised pork belly. For something a little more out there, opt for the crocodile ravioli.

Pamper: Saltair

Located on a small hill a few minutes out of the main town, you can’t help but feel tranquil at this luxurious spa resort. The waiting room has floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering panoramic views of the lush landscaped gardens and rolling hills beyond.

A number of the treatments at Saltair incorporate Aboriginal elements, which are designed to relax and reconnect you with nature. The Indigenous-inspired Rhythmic Massage includes an Aboriginal smoke ritual and rhythmic strokes to totally de-stress you. And when you’re done, enjoy some calming Aboriginal tea.

They also offer facial treatments, hand and foot pampering, spray tanning, waxing and an indulgent salt water treatment that uses Dead Sea salts. If you want to go all out, opt for one of their Day Spa Packages, which last for a few hours and pamper you from top to toe.
